12/28/10

meeting notes from 10/19

We wrote a mission statement!  I used Queer Rock camp as a place holder until we find a name.  We might want a name that does not use "queer" or "rock" in it.  The next meeting is on Dec. 29th at Old School Pizza at 2pm.  See you there.

(Queer Rock Camp) is a music camp for L.G.B.T.Q.Q.I.A. youth and
their allies.   Through instrument instruction, band practice, and
workshops (QRC) aims to empower youth by building confidence,
fostering and strengthening peer alliances and dismantling gender
binaries.  (QRC) aspires to promote queer visibility in music through
L.G.B.T.Q.Q.I.A. and allied instructors, mentors, and visiting
performers.

Ideas for places to hold camp (this is the first order of business for
once we have the place we will know the week they are available to
host camp and then we can start recruiting for volunteers and campers
and make a budget) :

 - The Northern is into it and totally ideal except they are not sure
they will still be in their current location.  They said if they are
situated in a new location we could potentially have the camp there,
assuming they still have practice spaces. They want an email with our
mission statement. We will keep in contact with them.
-Lincoln Elementary school.  We will email the principle our mission
statement and ask if they would be interested in donating or renting
the space.
- Precession Studio.  This is where gender jam has their event.  Not
sure it would work cause they don't have practice spaces.  Maybe a
possible venue for a benefit?
-The midnight Sun
-Evergreen
- (new idea from Erica Freas) The first Christian Church.  Actually
L.A. girls rock was in a church. What do people think about this?
Could this deter campers who have issues with religious upbringing?

ok....then we talked about workshops:
 - a health and healthy relationship workshop possibly combined with
self-defense or image and identity.  This would include how to deal
with abuse of all forms from less serious bullying to more serious
assault.  This also would include how to support friends dealing with
abuse, how to set boundaries/how to respect boundaries.
- a drag workshop.  This could include performance techniques, how to
be a diva, costuming.  This could be combined with a history of
L.G.B.T.Q.Q.I.A. musicians and performers.
-songwriting (we are brainstorming about this one....how do we spice
it up.  it is useful to give structor, i.e. verse/chorus, maybe work
on  ideas about what to write about.

Also we are planing a benefit weekend!!!!  The first show is going to
be in Oly on Friday the 7th.  We are asking Sharkpact, The Mona Reels
and the Need.  We are going to ask if we can do it at Craig and Ruth's
house on 4th Ave near Ralphs. Then on Saturday there will be a show in
Seattle.  we are asking my parade and others to play.  Nell is making
a sick printed poster to flyer and then sell at the show.  ooo...does
anyone know a taro card reader....maybe we could sell readings.  Also
we want to have a bar.  What about asking someone to donate beer or a
keg to us.  Maybe Gravity in olympia.  I don't know about seattle..any
ideas.  There will be an info table about camp.

Next....we have a name!!!!....maybe.  We like the name A.M.P.  an
acronym for the Allied Music Project.  We want a name that doesn't
have "Queer" or "Rock" in it because those terms are limiting and
exclusive. We want a neutral name with a subtitle of something like "a
music camp L.G.B.T.Q.Q.I.A. youth and their allies".  Let's decide on
a name soon so we can put it on the flyer for the benefit show/in the
emails to potential places for camp.
